Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Hanoi – Na Khan. ~180 km, ~8 h.

Today is the first day of this Northeast & Cat Ba Cruise in 9 days. Before starting to ride, we will have a short briefing to let you know about the rules. In addition, the guide will show you how to understand him by his body language. We start around 9.30am after the rush hour.

In fact, today’s ride is quite a long ride but easy (so early departure is better) from Hanoi to Na Khan 180 km. In general, the road is sealed all the way until Bac Kan. However, the last part from Bac Kan to Na Khan is wild and a little bumpy. Na Khan is a Tay village, Mr. Lo, the chief of the village will welcome us to his house.

Day 2: Na Khan – Ba Be. ~50 km, ~2 h.

A short drive from Na Khan to Ba Be on a bumpy road. Then have lunch at our captain’s house (Mr. Sao). Easy boating on the lake and river. Go to the market (if it is the day you arrive). Stop at a waterfall, beautiful swim, etc. Down the waterfall, we could visit the village and a small school (only a few pupils during the summer). We propose to stay in the stilt house of our captain.

Day 3: Ba Be – Quang Hoa. ~170 km, ~8 h.

In fact, today is a beautiful ride up to Cao Bang province. There are a few passes from where you can dominate the area. The road is easy but there are many curves. While riding we can stop a lot. Altogether, with stops for drinks and food, it should be an 8-hour journey. Then ride 1 more hour to reach the beautiful village of Quang Hoa, in the middle of a mountain cirque. This is the territory of Nung An people. Spend the night at our friend’s house.

Day 4: Quang Hoa – Na Tau – Quang Hoa. ~30 km, ~1 h.

In fact, Na Tau is a completely unknown area and we propose to discover it by raft and motorbike. Rivers and waterfalls everywhere are extremely beautiful and wild. It is only 15 km from Quang Hoa. On the return, we invite you for the aperitif at the village of Phuc Sen, artisan village Nung An, the owner is the brother of our host.

Day 5: Quang Hoa – Ban Gioc – Quang Hoa. ~100 km, ~3 h.

Having obtained permission from the border police we make our way through spectacular scenery to Vietnam’s most impressive waterfalls. Weather permitting we can swim right up to where the 50 m high falls hit the river.

Day 6: Quang Hoa – Lang Son (or Mau Son). ~160 km, ~7 h.

Ride from Quang Hoa to Lang Son. Then continue driving toward the border from Lang Son to Mau Son. Mau Son is 30 km away from Lang Son, 1.541m above sea level. Quite cool in the evening! Night in the guesthouse of Mau Son Resort.

Recently, we received some complaints about room service and prostitution in Mau Son. In case you want better hotel rooms, we could stop in Lang Son city. In the near future, a large company will make Mau Son as a resort just like the way they made Sapa Legend. You have more facilities like cable cars, games but it also means more touristy.

Day 7: Lang Son (or Mau Son) – Hai Phong. ~200 km, ~8 h.

In the morning, you can take a short walk and meet the Red Dzao group (about 3 hours walking). Alternatively, start directly to the coast to arrive early into Hai Phong and spend the night on the sea beach.

In general, you mainly ride down the hill and some tracks are bumpy.

On the other hand, you see the wild mountains in the morning and bathing site in the evening.

Day 8: Hai Phong – Cruising on the bay – Cat Ba. Boating.

Arriving at the boat landing, a private “Jonque” is waiting to bring us to cruising onto the labyrinth of the mythic bay of Ha Long.

Depending on the weather, we can visit these volcanic caves, generally, the cave of Thien Cung, wander around to meeting with floating villages of fishermen or promenade into a wild creek of the bay.

Day 9: Cat Ba – Hai Phong – Hanoi. ~120 km, ~3 h. End of Northeast & Cat Ba Cruise In 9 Days.

After breakfast, we ride to Cat Ba island. Possibly arrive at 9 AM. Then we enjoy a short ballad on this island before getting lunch. At 15h, we take a high-speed ferry to Hai Phong where we reoccupy our vehicles to ride back to Hanoi.

We try to arrive in Hanoi before 5pm to avoid rush hours. Otherwise, you should be good with city traffic from the experience you got over the last days.
