Lang Son city is a location in far northern Vietnam, the capital of Lang Son Province. This city has nearly one million people. It is accessible by road and rail from Hanoi, the Vietnamese capital.
History Of Lang Son City
Lang Sos is an ancient citadel. The city was occupied by France during the Sino-French War in January 1885. However, the brigade there conducted a hasty retreat after a failed attack on China. In fact, the “retreat from Lang Son” became the most controversial aspect of the war. In reality, it led to the fall of the Jules Ferry ministry in France.
The French Army later established a permanent garrison there. However, it was captured in 1950 during Vo Nguyen Giap’s offensive against the French border forts. With this victory, Viet Minh had a turning point in the Indochina War.
The city was the centre of fighting during the Sino-Vietnamese War of 1979 and suffered extensive damage.
At present, Lang Son is one of the most important trading posts between Vietnam and China. Border gates are famous for many smuggling electronic products and other items.
