Day 1: Arrive in Hanoi

Arrive in Hanoi. Transfer to hotel. Time relaxing for a promenade around Hoan Kiem Lake and ancient, yet lively Old Quarter. O/N in Camellia hotel.

Day 2: Hanoi City Tour (B, L, D)

Visit Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Ho Chi Minh stilt house, One-pillar Pagoda, and Temple of Literature. Afternoon exploring of Hanoi’s silk, art or visit Ethnology museum, and other museums. Night train to Lao Cai.

Day 3: Lao Cai – Bac Ha Sunday Market (B, L, D)

6.00 am arrive in Lao Cai. After breakfast, take a jeep transfer to Bao Nhai, bike ride 20 km uphill to Bac Ha. Visit the most colourful hill tribe market day. In the afternoon, we ride to H’mong village around Bac Ha. O/N in Sao Mai hotel.

Day 4: Bac Ha to Sapa. ~50 km (B, L, D)

Morning transfer to Lao Cai, challenging climb up 35 km to Sapa (alt. + 1,550m). Afternoon cycling around Sapa, visit Ta Van, a village of the Giay minority. O/N Victoria Sapa hotel.

Day 5: Sapa – Heaven gate – Tam Duong. ~80 km (B, L, D)

Best mountain view today, about 3 hours up the hill, with a stopover at Silver waterfalls for relaxing before we conquer the highest mountain pass Oquiho. Then descending down the great panoramic view of Hoang Lien Son mountain range. Lunch en route. Nice villages of H’mong and “coins” Dao near Binh Lu. O/N in Phuong Thanh hotel.

Day 6: Tam Duong – Paso – Lai Chau. ~115 km (B, L, D)

Some part of the road is bad, but the great view along Nam Na River. Scenic Da river from Hang Tom suspension bridge. O/N Lan Anh hotel.

Day 7: Lai Chau – Dien Bien. ~105 km (B, L, D)

A nice ride day with a stopover at the Red H’mong village before a climb up to Mathiho pass. O/N Muong Thanh hotel.

Day 8: Dien Bien – Tuan Giao. ~80 km (B, L, D)

Ride back to the former French battlefield: A1 hill, De Castries bunker, Dien Bien museum… you will see some old US weapons here too. Then we have an easy ride through many Thai villages to Tuan Giao. O/N Tuan Giao guesthouse.

Day 9: Tuan Giao – Pha Din pass – Son La. ~85 km (B, L, D)

Challenge 20 km winding climb up the hill and 15 km downhill. Nice landscape of green rice fields and karst valley. Light traffic, wandering water buffaloes, Thai and Hmong kids. O/N Trade Union hotel.

Day 10: Son La – Moc Chau – Mai Chau. ~120 km (B, L, D)

Bus support available. The road passes beneath spectacular karst cliffs with the valley floor visible far below. Lots of Black Thai villages, descending to Mai Chau valley. O/N on stilt house of Thai.

Day 11: Mai Chau – Pu Luong. ~50 km (B, L, D)

A relaxing day of cycling, boat cruise, walking to visit villages. O/N on stilt house.

Day 12: Mai Chau – Hanoi. ~95 km (B, L, D)

The first 15 km out of Mai Chau is up Thung Nhuoi pass, then we go 17 km down to Man Duc and two more gentle hills to Doc Cun (25km). We take a small route to Bai Chao onto Luong Son. Our bus picks up and comes back to Hanoi. Farewell dinner. O/N Camellia hotel.

Day 13: Departure (B). End Of The Best Mountain Scenery Of Vietnam.

Transfer to airport for departure.
