Day 1: Hanoi – Phu Yen. ~165 km, ~6 h.
Today is the first day of this 10 days Northeast and Halong Bay cruise. Before starting to ride, we will have a short briefing to let you know about the rules. In addition, the guide will show you how to understand him by his body language. We start around 9.30am after the rush hours.
Ride to Phu Yen on a country road with a stop in Son Tay. On November 20-21, 1970, a joint force composed of USAF Special Operations and rescue personnel and U.S. Army Special Forces, supported by U.S. Navy Carrier Task Force 77, made a daring raid on the Son Tay prison camp located less than 50 miles from Hanoi. The objective was to rescue as many as 100 U.S. captives thought to be held there. The assault troops, in six ARRS helicopters accompanied by two C-130 aircraft, flew 640km to Son Tay from bases in Thailand. U.S. Navy pilots made a diversionary raid while 116 USAF and Navy aircraft from seven air bases and three aircraft carriers flew refuelling, surface-to-air missile suppression, fighter cover, close air support, early warning, communications support and reconnaissance missions. There were no prisoners found in camp.
After lunch, ride on the winding mountain road to Phu Yen to take in some of the best mountain views in Northwest Vietnam. Overnighting in a hotel.
Day 2: Phu Yen – Vu Linh. ~150 km, ~6 h.
Ride from Phu Yen to Vu Linh, descending into Red River Delta on asphalted road and dirt roads, then reach Thac Ba lake. Arrive at a Dao family in Vu Linh. The welcome is exceptional. If it’s early, boating and swimming in Thac Ba lake.
Day 3: Vu Linh – Na Khan. ~165 km, ~6 h.
You ride from Vu Linh to Na Khan through Tuyen Quang. The road is sealed almost all the way. The last part (10 kilometres) is wild and bumpy. Na Khan is a Tay village, in the middle of the primitive forest. The government built a new road and it’s a bit noisy but still a good stop. Mr. Lo, chief of the village will welcome us in his house.
Day 4: Na Khan – Ba Be. ~50 km, ~2 h.
A short drive from Na Khan to Ba Be on a bumpy road. Lunch at our captain’s house (Mr. Dang, we call him Zi Dang. Regrettably, he passed away in 2009 but his son, Mr. Sao, will continue his business). Easy boating on the lake and river. Go to market (if it is the day you arrive). Stop at the waterfall, beautiful swim etc. Ong pirate, the chief of Dau Dang waterfall where we enjoy dinner. Down the waterfall, we could visit the village and a small school (only a few pupils during the summer). Spend the night in a stilt house.
Day 5: Ba Be – Cao Bang. ~170 km, ~8 h.
Beautiful ride up to Cao Bang province. Few passes from where you can dominate the area. The road is easy but has many curves. We can stop very often. Altogether, stop for drinks and food it should be an 8-hour journey. Stay in a hotel in Cao Bang.
Day 6: Cao Bang – Ban Gioc Waterfalls – Quang Uyen. ~130 km, ~2 h.
Having obtained permission from the border police we make our way through spectacular scenery to Vietnam’s most impressive waterfalls. Weather permitting we can swim right up to where the 50m high falls hit the river.
